The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and Ethnarch of the Orthodox Millet Gregorios V (p. 1797-1798, 1806-1808, 1818-1821, born Georgios Angelopoulos in 1746, killed by the Ottoman Turks on the Easter Sunday of 1821) holding a paterissa (bishop's staff) with two undulating, confronted serpents with protruding tongues, the liturgical tradition originating in the Eastern Church from the 1500s AD.
