Alexei Alexeev and the east view of the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano (Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican) from the roof of the Castel Sant'Angelo (Mausoleo di Adriano, Mausoleum of Hadrian). It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) as a mausoleum for himself and his family and was later used by the popes as a fortress, castle and prison, with philosopher, mathematician, poet, and cosmological theorist Giordano Bruno (1548-1600 AD) being one of its most famous inmates. |
