Figure EAA-chi-032. Alexei Alexeev and the south-east view of the Mountain (Front) Gate of the Shaolin Monastery. It was founded in 495 AD, during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen (r. 471-499 AD) of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-535 AD). The first monastery's abbot was Batuo (Buddhabhadra, fl. 400s AD), who came to China from India or Greco-Buddhist Central Asia in 464 AD to spread the Buddhist teachings. Another important figure in the monastery's history was Damo (Bodhidharma, fl. 400s AD), a dhyana master and the founder of Chan Buddhism, who also came from the Xiyu (Western Regions, i.e. Central Asia, Persia or India). The monastery is famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with the Shaolin Kung Fu. This sacred compound was extensively modified and decorated by the following generations of rulers.
