| Figure NAM-can-017. Heracles (Hercules) holding his club and standing victorious over the defeated polycephalic Lernean Hydra with its multiple extremities terminating with the canine heads; lying on the ground: flaming torch used for cauterizing the stumps of the severed Hydra's heads to prevent them from growing again by Heracles' charioteer, lover and genetically "half"-nephew Iolaos (son of Iphicles, son of Alcmene and her human husband, Theban general Amphitryon, and heteropaternally superfecundated half maternal twin brother of Heracles, son of Zeus, not depicted) (The Second Labour); herd of centaurs, possibly including Nessus, Chiron or Pholus, all eventual victims of the Heracles' arrows poisoned with the Hydra's blood; tricephalic giant Geryon, also the victim of the toxic Hydra's blood, delivered by an arrow and the dying guardian of the Geryon's cattle Eurytion (The Tenth Labour); the Erymanthian Boar (The Fourth Labour). |
