Figure 085 of 090 VATICAN: LOCATIONS | SET 001 | SET 002 | SET 003 | SET 004 Figure 087 of 090
Figure EUR-vat-086. Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337 AD), observing an unusual celestial portent: shining cross, accompanied by the motto "In This Sign You Shall Conquer" (ΕΝ ΤΟΥΤΩΙ ΝΙΚΑ in Greek, IN HOC SIGNO VINCES in Latin) just before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (28 October 312 AD) against the rival Roman Emperor Maxentius (r. 306-312 AD). The giant winged quadrupede dragon flying in the sky is probably the iconographic reference to the pagan custom of using cavalry dragon-standards, which Romans probably borrowed from their perennial adversaries from the east, Dacians, Sarmatians, or Parthians.
